Foyer and Entryway Lighting

Every home needs the proper foyer and entryway lighting. This is where you greet guests when they come in, and where those guests form their first impressions of your home. At Hermitage in Nashville, we love helping people find new front entry lighting, and if you’re looking for a new pendant or chandelier, or you want to add some sconces to your foyer, we can show you what we have to offer!

You can shop in our showroom or browse our online catalog to see what type of lighting we have in stock. We carry various styles and sizes, and we know you’ll discover something that suits your tastes. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time!

AMBIENT LIGHTING

For your overhead ambient lighting, there are a few options you can consider. If you have the space for it, a chandelier can be a great option, as it will provide plenty of light for the foyer and act as a focal point for the area. You’ll want to measure the height of the ceiling in the entryway to determine if there’s room for a chandelier.

Other ambient lighting choices include pendant lights and flush or semi-flush fixtures. Pendants don’t take up as much space as a chandelier, but can still be the perfect hanging light for your entry. If your ceiling is too low to accommodate a pendant light, then a flush or semi-flush fixture can be ideal. This light will provide ample illumination, and you won’t have to worry about it protruding into the space.

It’s important to measure the length, width, and height of your entryway to determine how much ambient light you’ll need. Our team is more than happy to help with any questions you have, and with the right measurements, you’ll know exactly how much space you have for overhead lighting and any accent lights you want to add.

ACCENT LIGHTING

Since your foyer or entryway likely isn’t a large space, you may only need one or two accent lights. However, it’s important to choose the right accent lighting so that the fixture matches your ambient light and achieves the purpose you want it to. This light should illuminate the middle layer of the space, making your entryway more welcoming and inviting.

Wall sconces are a great choice for accent lighting, and you can place one or two around your foyer. The placement will depend on where you have room, and sconces can be installed in the middle of the wall or in the corner. The size and style of the sconce are up to you, but it’s important to keep in mind the dimensions of your entryway so that the fixtures don’t seem too big or too small.

Lamps can also be used as accent lights in your entryway, provided that there is an electrical outlet for them. If you have a small table or shelf where you keep your keys or where you set the mail down when you come inside, consider adding a table or desk lamp for more accent lighting.

When used properly, accent lights in your foyer or entry can make the space feel more complete. You may only need one or two fixtures, but they can make a big difference in the overall layout and design of the space.

ENTRYWAY MIRRORS

If your home has a particularly small entryway, you can make it feel bigger with mirrors! When put in the right spot and at the proper height, a mirror can reflect and refract light around the space, making it feel bigger than it actually is.

Mirrors can also be functional pieces, and placing one in your foyer allows you to check your appearance before leaving the house or after coming inside. Mirrors are also decor, and you can match the style of mirror to your ambient and accent lighting.

ARTWORK AND DECOR

Speaking of decor, your entryway can be a great place to display photographs or a favorite painting. If you recently had family portraits taken, hang a few in your foyer so that guests and visitors can see them when they enter. If you’re an art collector, display prints and paintings in your foyer to give people a sense of your personal taste and your eye for design.

The size and shape of your decor will depend on the size and shape of your entryway. You don’t want the space to feel crowded, so if you have limited wall space, make sure to choose photos or artwork that fit properly. If your foyer extends to the second floor, you can hang things a bit higher on the wall, but you don’t want them to be so high that they’re not easy to view.

HALLWAY AND STAIRS

Once you’ve found the right ambient and accent lighting for your entryway, you can extend that lighting design into your hallway and up the stairs. For example, the sconces you used in the foyer can also be used on the stairs, and the flush-mount light you used on the entry’s ceiling can also be used in the hallway. It can make things feel more connected and cohesive by continuing your lighting design from one space to another.

LIGHTING CONTROLS

After you’ve chosen your foyer or entryway lighting, you’ll need to make sure you have the proper lighting controls for each fixture. You’ll need a switch for the overhead light, as well as a switch for any wall lights. If you’re going to add track lighting for any artwork or decor, those can be operated via their own switch. If you want a dimmer switch for your ambient light, we can help you choose the best option.

Timers are also a good choice for your foyer lighting, allowing you to set when the lights turn on and turn off each day. If you want the overhead light to come on at the same time each evening before you get home from work, and then shut off right before you go to bed, we can show you a number of different timer choices.

Smart lighting controls are also a possibility for your entryway. If you want to learn more about home automation, we’d love to speak with you!
