THE VANITY

The vanity is a very important part of any bathroom, and it’s essential to have the right vanity lighting. Whether you’re shaving, putting on makeup, or checking your hair before leaving for the day, the time you spend in front of the mirror should be enjoyable and productive. If you don’t have the proper lighting, or there are unwanted lines and shadows on your face when you’re in front of the mirror, it might be time to upgrade your vanity fixtures.

One solution to unwanted lines and shadows is to install wall sconces on either side of the vanity mirror, instead of the traditional above-mirror light fixture. Sconces will cast light from the side, illuminating across your face, as opposed to above. This can help you see better as you brush your teeth, put on makeup, or shave. If you want to go with the traditional light fixture above the mirror, we can recommend the best option that fits your design.

THE SHOWER

The shower can be a tricky space to light, especially if your bathroom has standard-height ceilings. For this area, recessed lighting can be a great choice, or you can with a combination ventilation fan and light fixture. You’ll want to have the fan for removing moisture from the air while you shower, and the light will help you see as you shampoo and condition. You’ll likely only need one light fixture above the shower, as it’s usually a fairly small space within the bathroom.

As for the lighting controls for your shower light, you can install an individual dimmer switch that allows you to set the level where you want it based on the time of day. You may not want a bright, shining light during an early morning shower, and a dimmer will help you control just exactly how much light there is.

THE BATHTUB

It’s often only the master bathroom that has a tub, but as this is the bathroom you’re most likely to update, it’s important to consider what type of light you can install above the tub. You may have installed that large soaking or spa tub you’ve wanted for years, and now you want a light fixture to match. A small chandelier or pendant can be the perfect option for the bathtub area, as it will hang down and provide plenty of light while you’re enjoying a nice soak.

You can also choose a certain style of light fixture for your bathtub, either going with something elegant and ornate, or something sleek and contemporary. This light should match the overall design of your bathroom, and it can act as a focal point for the entire space.

ADDITIONAL BATHROOM LIGHTING

When it comes to the rest of the bathroom, it’s good to make sure each area has enough light. You can install another wall sconce near the toilet, or add LED strip lighting at the bottom of your base cabinets. If the bathroom is large enough, consider installing a central ambient fixture that’s separate from the vanity lighting and the bathtub light, as well as a few more recessed lights for additional ambient and accent lighting.

THE MASTER BATHROOM

Since the guest bath isn’t used as much, you can choose the lights that you feel best fit the space without costing too much.

The shower may need a recessed light, but only if the main ambient light on the ceiling isn’t enough to illuminate the entire area. You’ll definitely need a ventilation fan to keep the moisture levels under control, and we can help you select the best option. As for the rest of the guest bathroom, you can add a few more wall sconces or recessed lights as needed, along with any lighting you want for the toe kicks of your base cabinets.

THE POWDER ROOM

Finally, the powder room is the smallest of your home’s bathrooms, which means it won’t need as many light fixtures, but the lighting design is still important. With a toilet and a pedestal sink (or a single vanity), you’ll likely only need one overhead light and perhaps a sconce or two. The overhead light will provide ambient illumination for the entire space, while the sconces add task and accent lighting near the mirror. You can add a single vanity light above the mirror, which can help people see as they check their reflection or fix their hair when they’re over for a dinner party or a holiday gathering.

As for the lighting design of your powder room, feel free to get creative. Since it’s not a large space, the powder room can be a great spot to think outside of the box in terms of paint or wallpaper, lighting, and fixtures such as the sink and toilet, without worrying about breaking the bank!
